Enhancement Phalloplasty or Penis Enlargement Surgery has been available since 1967. There are two types - shaft widening and penis lengthening.

The lengthening procedure

This operation was first devised in the late 1960's and came into general use by our surgeon treating children with the condition of micro-penis by 1974. Later it was applied to adolescents and young adults who were not diagnosed in infancy.

Penile Shaft Widening

This is done by one of two techniques. The simplest of these is the Fat injection technique first used in 1988, and involves collection of fat from the abdomen, flanks or buttocks. After carefully cleaning, the fat is then injected under the skin of the penile shaft. The initial results are good but, unfortunately, not permanent. Fat reabsorption always takes place, but can be replaced at further injection operations. Reabsorption is not usually uniform and may cause an unaesthetic deformed penis. For this reason we do not recommend this method of penile widening.

A permanent technique is Dermal Fat Grafting which is an operation, adapted from Burns Surgery and used in penile shaft widening since 1988. In this technique the Dermal Fat grafts are taken from the waist at the belt area, or from the buttock fold at the top of the legs and then inserted under the skin of the penis. This technique takes longer to perform than the fat injection technique and is more painful post-operatively, but has the advantage that 98% of the fat is retained and is permanent. The actual increase in width is determined by the elastic limit of the penile skin, and is usually 1-2 cm's increase in shaft diameter.

Post Operation Recovery Requirements: - All patients are required to have a minimum of 3 weeks off work. Spending a maximum of this time lying horizontal.

Results

Most men are very pleased with the results both from an appearance and functional point of view. The low rate of complications in penile lengthening and/or dermal fat grafting (eg. wound infection) is testimony to the safety of these operations. Most dissatisfaction is associated with the fat injection technique, and many of those patients who have had that temporary technique have later opted for a Dermal Fat Graft or have required surgical correction for their penile deformity.

NOTE: FOLLOW UP CONSULTATIONS AFTER SURGERY

** All patients either local, interstate or international will be required to have between 3 to 6 consultations after surgery
