A vital aspect of a man’s identity is his penis, and that includes the look, feel, and performance. If any one of these things falls by the wayside, many men feel self-conscious and struggle to maintain their confidence. Whether it’s in front of other men in the locker room at the gym or in the presence of their sexual partner, there are certain expectations men have for the appearance of their penis. When our male patients come into the Australian Centre for Cosmetic and Penile Surgery in Sydney, they all have the same question—is penile surgery permanent?
Before we talk about the permanence of penile surgery, let’s talk about the many types of penile surgery you can request a consultation with A/prof. Colin Moore, so you know what to expect and what problems we can solve with these surgeries. We are aware that every one of you wants to quickly remedy any penile conditions you’re experiencing with minor downtime, pain, and side-effects, which are things we take into account in every procedure and treatment that affects a delicate and important part of your body – your penis.
Hypospadias and epispadias correction is a surgery we perform on patients who experience issues with this congenital defect that causes the opening of the urethra to be anywhere but the tip. With these conditions, the opening of the urethra is above or below the shaft, causing much discomfort in the way you urinate and other functions of the penis.
Phalloplasty is a penile surgery that involves lengthening and widening of the penis. During this procedure, a ligament is cut so that the penis is allowed to extend fully from the body. Girth is enhanced by fat grafting or permanent filler injections into the tissues of the penis to provide a widening of the organ.
Curvature correction surgery can involve either plication or grafting. The plication procedure will work by shortening the longest side of the curved penis by pulling it inward, or making it shorter and balancing the two sides, so curvature no longer shows. Grafting calls for insertion of a graft within the tissues of the penis to help straighten out the curve without loss of length.
These procedures tend to be the most common of the penile surgeries we offer at the Australian Centre for Cosmetic and Penile Surgery, and while they are all created as permanent procedures, there can be exceptions. Aging can change the appearance of the size and width of the penis as tissues break down and naturally lose fat volume, while decreased circulation and cellular renewal in the tissue may affect the responsiveness of an erection.
Hypospadias and epispadias corrective procedures are permanent, and will not be modified by age. Curvature correction can also weaken as ligaments lose strength or the method used relies on stitching that can come undone over time.
